So that just about covers application launching, not really an in-depth topic, and so far not really achieving anything more than Spotlight (aside from recent application documents), but Launchbar can do so much more than this. This is very handy for quickly reopening files recently worked on. For certain applications, such as the Microsoft Office and iWork suites, pressing the right hand arrow on a highlighted application, will display the last few documents opened by that application. As soon as the application you wish to launch appears at the top of the list, simply hit the return key and the application will open up. Now to launch an Application it is simply a case of starting to type the first few letters of the name of an application, for example, if I type “wo”, Microsoft Word will appear at the top of the list. So where do you start? First of all let’s activate Launchbar by pressing & SpaceBar, and the following will appear at the top of your screen in the middle (by default): Unlike Spotlight, Launchbar is fairly intelligent and learns how you use it, constantly improving it’s own functionality homed to a particular user. With my developed convention for naming files, I find Spotlight is still much better for opening up documents, pictures, and certain other file types, whereas I use Launchbar to quickly launch my applications, websites, and other utilities. I have changed the standard keyboard shortcut ( & SpaceBar) for opening Spotlight to now open up the Launchbar search window, and set Alt & SpaceBar to open up Spotlight. Essentially it is a much improved version of Apple’s own Spotlight utility – that said, I still use Spotlight for certain tasks instead of Launchbar, but I will go into more detail about this later on.īefore I start my mini-review, let me explain more about how I have my system set up.
